I need bigger wheels to take care of rough pavements! Something like 80mm instead of the current 70mm would probably be perfect. For that size, Orangatang Kegel is the only choice. 1/4" risers are needed as a results. Looks really, really good! The wheels extend beyond the deck and I can now stand right on the edge without tipping the board over. Much more fun riding it now!

Ordered some hardware and wheels for both my DIY electric and regular longboard and they arrived! Oh wait! I ordered 1/2" risers and they gave me what? 1/4"?
A Sony Action Cam mount is now in place: Rubber bands are needed to keep the cam in position. Without them the joint would either become loose or break. (Photographed near South Point Park)
Just unbelievable! (Even though it took me 40 seconds to ramp up to that speed.) The next two steps:
- learn to get up to that speed much faster, say in just a few seconds - learn to stop at high speed without the use of remote controller The highest speed I have ever experienced on a longboard before was 22km/h. That speed could become pretty boring after just a short while on a long stretch of bicycle path. It would be exciting to find out what it is like to ride above 30, and then 40km/h and then even higher if that is achievable with my DIY at all. Anyway, 37.4km/h was achieved today! To me, that was a good start. I found it very hard to keep myself stable on the board above 30km/h. It's like something was pushing my head backward and gave me the feeling of starting to fall off the board on my back. The way I stand on the board has to be changed.
Two other things that I noticed today: - At a speed faster than 30km/h. running over small pebbles gave me big wobbles! - Hub motors have much less drag than a belt driven system. Going downhill will hub motors without power was even faster than my old electric on full throttle. Here is a comparison with my old board on a similar trip as of today: Old E-Go New DIY Average Speed 12.9 17.1km/h Highest Achieved 22.0 37.4km/h Highest Up Slope 14.9 25.3km/h Highest Dn Slope 21.4 29.4km/h (free rolling only) |
